ACE Press Award Winners 2008For circulation excellence and endeavour by a national newspaperGold: Daily Mail and Mail on Sunday This was a very keenly fought category with the marking of each of the entrants being within a point or two of each other. The judges said, "The Daily Mail and Mail on Sunday just had the edge over the whole year in what was a keenly contested and close run Award." Silver: Financial Times Bronze: The Guardian and the Observer For circulation excellence and endeavour by a regional newspaperThe judges were both surprised and disappointed that there were no entries for this Award. Clearly they felt that this could not be a reflection of the lack of activity and achievement within this vibrant and competitive market and therefore felt that both ACE and the Regional Press should engage more closely over the next twelve months to ensure that this Award is better supported in 2009. For circulation excellence and endeavour by a smaller magazineGold: Terrorizer Magazine - Dark Arts Ltd Once again this was a highly competitive category with only eight points separating the top eight entries. Nevertheless a clear winner emerged from what is a highly competitive sector within the Smaller Magazine category. The judges said, ‘Terrorizer Magazine just had the edge within both the category and within the sector it covers. An excellent entry.’ Silver: Ultra VW - CH Publications Bronze: Coast - National Magazine Company For circulation excellence and endeavour by a major magazine Joint Gold: Bratz Magazine - D.C.Thomson The judges could not separate two entrants in this category, even after a re-evaluation and re-marking session. It was therefore decided to have joint winners in what was a very well supported category with plenty of high quality entrants. The judges said, ‘ Even after re-marking we could not separate Bratz Magazine and Psychologies. Even though serving different markets they both demonstrated excellent circulation understanding and skill.’ Silver: Shout - D.C. Thomson Bronze: No award For the most effective promotional campaign by a national newspaperGold: Area Focus Campaign - The Guardian and The Observer Another very well supported Award which clearly demonstrated the enormous diversity of ideas and talent within this sector in reaching and influencing the buying public. Most of the entries in this category were strong although some, through their measured success, clearly showed a deep appreciation of their marketplace and audience. The judges said, ‘In terms of content, application and timing the Guardian and Observer Area Focus Campaign was spot on. Well thought out and applied.’ Silver: We live in Financial Times - Financial Times Bronze: Prince's 'Planet Earth' CD Promotion - The Mail on Sunday For the most effective promotional campaign by a regional newspaperGold: Eros Card Promotion - Evening Standard Although the number of entries for this Award were small the Evening Standard were clear winners. The judges said, ‘The Evening Standard with their Eros Card promotion were innovative, hard working and determined. In an increasingly cluttered promotional marketplace it is not always easy to stand out. They achieved this.’ Silver: No award Bronze: No award For the most effective promotional campaign by a smaller magazineGold: The Brightlingsea to Bristol Campaign Practical Boat Owner - Marketforce It is not always easy for smaller magazines to obtain sufficient promotional resources to make a difference. A ‘little money’ does not always go a long way in this sector and has to be used selectively and judiciously. In all these cases it was. The judges said, ‘Practical Boat Owner showed clearly that they knew their audience, knew where they were and knew what they wanted. A well targeted and implemented campaign.’ Silver: The Sunday Times Travel Magazine - News Magazines ltd Bronze: Fire Publishing Portfolio in One-Stop stores For the most effective promotional campaign by a major magazineGold: Escape with a Magazine Promotion - Marketforce Choosing the winners for this category came down to very fine measurements. The top eight entries were all within five points of each other. Not only did this demonstrate the fierce competition required to make the best of promotional spend but also the high standards shown by all the entrants. The judges said. ‘The Escape with a Magazine Promotion had a marked, although slight, winning margin in this category. The Promotion was clear, well targeted and worked hard.’ Silver: Indie 4 Indies NME Promotion - Marketforce Bronze: Radio Times Christmas Issue - BBC Magazine The following three awards are for service and communication to retailers. Nominations for these awards were requested from the retail trade through a single page advert entry form published in three issues of Retail Newsagent during the month of February, a total of 789 nominations were received. For service and communication to retailers by a newspaperGold: Daily Mail Comments on the winner, The Daily Mail, included, ‘regular rep visits’, ‘good service’, ‘great promotions’, ‘good support for HND’" Silver: The Sun Bronze: Financial Times For service and communication to retailers by a magazineGold: Take a Break - H Bauer Comments on the winner, Take a Break, included, ‘good availability and promotions.’ Silver: Autotrader - Trade and Media Group Bronze: OK! Magazine - Northern and Shell For service and communication to retailers by a wholesalerGold: Menzies Distribution Comments on the winner, Menzies, included ‘helpful staff’, ‘improved service’, ‘good support through superleague.’ ‘It was noteworthy that three of Menzies Houses (Newbridge, Leeds and Linwood) performed well and came in for special mention.’ Silver: Dawsons News Bronze: SmithsNews Launch of the YearGold: Hornby Magazine - Marketforce/Ian Allen Publishing It was extremely pleasing to note the number of titles that had launched in the last year and entered the Award, but particularly pleasing to note the high standard of entry, reflecting the successes many of these titles have experienced in their first, and possibly, most challenging year. The judges said, ‘Despite the number and quality of entries one publication, Hornby Magazine, stood apart. In launch year it is impossible to get everything right. The winner appears to have got most things spot-on.’ Silver: Look - Marketforce Bronze: Match Attax - Topps Europe Ltd For achievement, awarded to an individual or team who/that has shown outstanding circulation innovation during 2007Gold: Guardian News and Media - GNM Circulation Team This year, above all, has shown how varied and different circulation innovations can be. With the right research, targeting and implementation there can be many ways of successfully getting to market. The key being to do the groundwork and basics well. The judges said, ‘There were more entries for this Award than any other this year. The quality and variety of entries made the judging quite challenging, however the Guardian team emerged as clear and deserved winners.’ Silver: National Magazine Circulation Team - The National Magazine Company Joint Bronze: COMAG and the PPA & ANMW. The Circulation Award, presented to an association or company whose professionalism and ingenuity has made a positive contribution in 2007Gold: Financial Times Ltd. and Financial Times Tomorrow’s Readers Today This Award reflects two criteria which are fundamental to our industry; professionalism and ingenuity. The proper and clever implementation of either new ideas or well established ones into a challenging and demanding market are keys to success. This was well reflected in the standard of entries. The judges said, ‘The Financial Times successfully merged the traditional with the new to produce an entry which reflected both a professional and a clever approach. They were excellent.’ Silver: National Magazine Circulation Team - The National Magazine Company Bronze: Magazine Category Management Project - NFRN The ACE Outstanding Achievement AwardThis award is the circulation community's highest accolade, awarded to an individual whose personal achievements have transformed the industry.
