The World Association of Newspapers and Ifra confirm their merger

The two main global newspaper industry trade bodies, the World Association of Newspapers and Ifra, have confirmed their merger.

From July 1 the two organisations will come together as World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers. The Ifra board formally approved the deal yesterday. The WAN board had approved the merger ealier this month.

The combined new organisation will represent more than 18,000 publications, 15,000 online sites and over 3,000 companies in more than 120 countries.

WANNP will appoint a chief executive in the near future. The current heads of WAN and Ifra, Timothy Balding and Reiner Mittelbach respectively, will jointly manage the merged association for the time being.

Gavin O'Reilly, president of WAN and group chief executive of Dublin-based Independent News & Media, will serve as president of the new organisation through 2010.
