9 Ladies Dancing – NewstrAid 2020

16th December 2020

In one of the toughest years the Newspaper and Magazine industry has ever faced, NewstrAid has been busier than ever.  ACE caught up with CEO of NewstrAid Mike Mirams to understand just how NewstrAid has been supporting the industry.

What does NewstrAid do?

NewstrAid, provides financial help, emotional support and practical advice to anyone from the news trade who is facing hardship. If you work or have worked in the sale and distribution of newspapers or magazines in the UK and need support, NewstrAid could help.

This year has certainly been challenging for everyone and it is at times like these that charities like NewstrAid are needed more than ever. We have had a really busy year as we continue to support those facing hardship. Here are a few of the key events from 2020.

So far in 2020 NewstrAid have…

Helped over 1000 colleagues facing hardship

Given regular financial support to more than 500 households

Paid out £118k in One-Off Grants to address specific needs

Paid out £61,350 to help with heating costs over the winter months

Coronavirus Support

In April, as the news trade adapted to lockdown and thousands of industry colleagues found themselves coping with reduced income due to illness, quarantine, furlough or redundancy, NewstrAid, launched a coronavirus support package for those facing hardship as a result of Covid-19, including:

  • State Benefits advice
  • Anxiety Support Services
  • Debt Advice
  • Signposting and information services
  • Financial support

We have already helped a wide range of colleagues from the trade and continue to provide support to anyone suffering as a result of Covid-19. Visit our website www.newstraid.org.ukor contact us for more information: oldben@newstraid.org.uk 0800 917 8616

Treat packages for beneficiaries

Back in May thanks to support from publishers, wholesalers and distributors, we were able to send more than 500 hampers filled with goodies such as biscuits, cakes and snacks to beneficiaries isolating or shielding at home.

Following the deliveries, emails, calls and letters of gratitude to the industry poured into NewstrAid from hundreds of beneficiaries across the UK showing how a little kindness goes a long, long way.

“What a wonderful surprise to receive that wonderful Hamper just when the lockdown is really starting to bite”

“Thank you so, so much for the hamper, it is much appreciated. I was feeling really down and lonely and it put a massive smile on my face!”

The big PPE mailout

At the end of the summer, we sent out hand sanitiser and reusable face masks to all our regular beneficiaries and volunteer almoners.

The response we received from the recipients was incredible.

I would just like to tell you how thrilled I was to receive my package of face masks and gel! It was a lovely surprise and I would like to say a big thank you for this gesture.

Thank you so much. Just knowing people are thinking about folk less fortunate makes a huge difference

New website launched

In November we were delighted to launch a new website. Featuring the charity’s new branding, the website includes a wealth of information about the services on offer to those from the news trade who are facing hardship, including details of how to contact the NewstrAid welfare team for help and support. In addition the site includes sections on how to get involved with the charity and volunteer. Take a look at www.newstraid.org.uk
